Blood Pressure Numbers

What do your blood pressure numbers mean?

Systolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood.  Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart is at rest between beats when the heart and vessels filling.  Although a persons’ blood pressure can vary naturally throughout the day, if the numbers are consistently high after many visits to the doctor, it is possible that you have pre-hypertension or high blood pressure.

Systolic blood pressure is measured when your doctor or nurse first hears your pulse. Diastolic pressure is measured when he or she can no longer hear your pulse.

Listen to your Doctor.

A number of patient will tend to have elevated blood pressure numbers every time they visit a doctor this phenomena is called "white coat high blood pressure."  For this reason doctors will often ask the patient to get their own measuring device so they can monitor their blood pressure at home when they are relaxed.  If the numbers continue to be high, the doctor will recommend treatment for the patient if the systolic pressure(upper number) is much above 120.  The lower number, or diastolic level, should not be to much higher than 80.

Doctors refer to hypertension as the silent killer because very few people suffer any symptoms such as headaches, until it's too late.  Untreated, chronic high blood pressure leads to stroke or heart attack.

Don't guess at your numbers.

Untreated high blood pressure is dangerous situation and can lead to heart failure and kidney failure and may be the underlying cause of almost 50% of strokes!
